Floyd Newsum Summer Studios Mentorship + Residency Program

In 2025, Project Row Houses’ (PRH) Floyd Newsum Summer Studios Mentorship + Residency Program will accept ten undergraduate students for an exclusive opportunity to learn and grow their creative practice in the historic neighborhood of Houston’s Third Ward.

This program honors the late PRH co-founder, artist, and educator, Floyd Newsum, and his commitment to supporting student artists. Eligible applicants will apply through Slideroom before Monday, April 7, 2025, to be considered for this opportunity.

The program will begin on Tuesday, May 13 with a two-week intensive of masterclasses and workshops, followed by an 6-week studio residency period starting Monday, June 16, that will culminate in a public exhibition opening on Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Requirements:

  • Currently or recently (within 1-year) enrolled in an academic program at a 2-year college or 4-year university in Houston or the surrounding area (50 miles)
  • Citizen of the United States
  • Have an interest in incorporating social sculpture and community-engaged art within their practice
  • Visual artists, performance artists, or arts professionals interested in writing, curating, or other disciplines.

Selected Summer Studios students receive: 

  • $1,000 stipend 
  • Free studio space at Project Row Houses
  • Mentorship with esteemed Houston-based artists
