Kindred Stories Current Location: Eldorado Ballroom, 2310 Elgin St #2
Kindred Stories was born of a love for reading and a passion for community. The Black-owned bookstore works to give kids and adults alike a space to explore the world of literary content and creative works fashioned by Black and Brown hands. Kindred Stories is committed to amplifying Black voices and bringing diverse stories from throughout the African diaspora to the Houston, TX community, providing well curated offerings to edify the swelling appetites for authentic stories as told by those who have lived them. While in residency, Kindred Stories was located at 2304 Stuart St.
Emancipation Economic Development Council (EEDC) Current Location: 4212 Emancipation Ave Suite 2
The Emancipation Economic Development Council (EEDC) is a collaborative of organized, informed and engaged faith-based organizations, nonprofits, community development corporations, businesses, local government entities and other stakeholders from the community. Their mission is to inspire hope and contribute to the revitalization and preservation of the Emancipation Park neighborhood of Third Ward toward the vision of a resilient, dynamic, and economically prosperous community where people live, work and thrive in a historically and culturally rich African American neighborhood. Their programming includes Emancipation Avenue Main Street, small business training, and a variety of resident engagement events.
All Real Radio (ARR), founded by local Houston artist and veteran radio personality ZIN, was created with the sole purpose of utilizing radio and video streaming technology to inform, educate and entertain a worldwide body of socially responsible individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic brackets. While in residency, ARR was located at 2503 Holman St.
Crumbville, TX Storefront Current Location: 3809 Sampson St, Ste B
Crumbville TX Storefront is the brick-and-mortar location of E-dub-a-licious Treats by Ella Russell. First featured in Round 43: Small Business/Big Change: Artists and Artrepreneurs, Crumbville provides baked goods with vegan alternatives as well as a space for the community to gather and celebrate life.
While in residency, Crumbville TX was located at 3409 Emancipation Ave in the Delia’s Lounge site. Crumbheads can pick up a range of cookies and Ella’s signature “stuffed cups” – cupcakes with a cookie base baked in at the new location near TSU.
Gulf Coast Cosmos Comicbook Co. Current Location: 2408 Wheeler Ave
Gulf Coast Cosmos Comicbook Co. is a Houston-based retail store with a mission to expand the vibe of the comic book industry/culture for comic book lovers throughout the cosmos. As champions for diversity in comics, the store carries a wide range of materials and believes that comic books are for everyone! While in residency, GCC was located at 2306 Stuart St. GCC still calls Third Ward home and can be found on Wheeler Ave.
Ujima Residents Resource House/Sankofa Research Institute 2501 Holman
Ujima Residents Resource House is a partnership between Sankofa Research Institute and the Emancipation Economic Development Council. Ujima, which means collective work and responsibility, offers a creative and stimulating space for residents to come together, mobilize and begin accessing opportunities. Through Ujima, SRI and the EEDC will work “to build and maintain our community together and to make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems, and to solve them together.”
Ujima, now home to Sankofa Research Institute, aims to assist in protecting vulnerable residents from displacement; promoting social and political integration of economically marginalized residents; and supporting the social mobility of economically-disadvantaged residents.
Sankofa Research Institute is a community-centered research institute that unifies residents of communities with professional researchers and community leaders in order to mobilize positive social change. While in residency, this partnership was located at 2501 Holman St.
NuWaters Food Co-op | 2014-2016
NuWaters Co-op was a member-owned and operated retail food market that made a difference in the Third Ward community. NuWaters was located at the Historic Eldorado Ballroom building at 2320 Elgin Street and was open seven days a week from 9 am to 4 pm.
OUR HOUSE | 2014-2016 Sub Heading
Our House was a Project Row Houses (PRH) incubation facilitated by Teaching Artist in Residence PK McCary. Our House was a place where artists could enhance their art to sell at the monthly PRH Third Ward Community Market, developing and enhancing their artistic products, while also creating revenue streams for themselves.
