Walking Tour of Emancipation Park Installations

  • Emancipation Park 3018 Emancipation Avenue Houston, TX, 77004 United States (map)

In conjunction with the grand reopening of the historic Emancipation Park, artists Jamal Cyrus, Nathaniel Donnett, and Chanelle Nicole Frazier have embarked on a series of interventions along Emancipation Avenue. The works are intended to engage visitors and community residents in both historic and contemporary narratives of the Third Wad neighborhood by way of traditional forms of communication (old sign posts and message boards). Curated placement of images and text were sourced from the Houston Metropolitan Research Center's collection of photographs, copies of local Black newspapers such as The Defender and The Houston Informer, and taken throughout the neighborhood of Third Ward.

Tours will begin at Emancipation Park and go to the following locations: RO Seafood, Navy Seafood, Dowling Spear, Flower man billboard, Way finding sign at Emancipation and Holman
