Third Ward Fresh | One Seed, One Block

June 9, 2018 | 10 am - 4 pm
Unity National Bank | 2602 Blodgett Street

The goal of “Third Ward Fresh” is to address the lack of access to fresh produce in the Third Ward, which is officially designated as a food desert. At the June, July, and August Free Market Square events, Third Ward Fresh will host a series of public cooking lessons delivered by local chefs that feature raw food recipes made from only unprocessed ingredients. These lessons will occur alongside performances by local Zydeco bands.

Additionally, Third Ward Fresh will partner with “One Seed, One Block,” a project organized by the University of Houston Black Student Union, to host a series of Community Potting / Painting sessions at Free Market Square and other locations in Northern Third Ward. Participants at these sessions will be provided with a pot, soil, and potato/zucchini seeds, as well as paint and brushes to decorate their newly potted plant. The intent for this activity is to provide participants with a stable food source of their own. These sessions will also take place on the second Saturday of each month at various locations throughout the Third Ward, including Unity National Bank and Wolf’s Pawn.

This initiative is supported by Project Row Houses through the Strategic Art Plan, generously funded by Houston Endowment.
