"A memorial garden provides a long-lasting tribute to a loved one who has passed away, as well as offers a place for the survivors to remember and to heal" -Dr. Leonard Perry
Garden (4- Carl B. Hampton, Ayanna Ade, Cleveland "Flower Man" Turner & Peoples Party II)
To commemorate Carl B. Hampton, Ayanna Ade, Flower Man and the presence of the Peoples Party II as a memorial garden - a way to acknowledge and preserve and create a sacred space for these individuals.
This space is presented in the same spirit as that of Nanjing Botanical Garden Memorial for Sun Yat-Sen and of the burial site of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas in France as documented and celebrated in the work of Cuban artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
2800 Dowling Street in 3rd Ward, Houston, formerly the People's Party II headquarters, echoes the Wounded Knee burial monument in Pine Ridge, South Dakota as a landmark location, representing a stance against external and oppressive forces. It is also a landmark location to be remembered for healing and recovery.
"Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested." - Nigerian Proverb
