An Appointment with Peace: Yoga and Meditation

This workshop is held in conjunction with Round 46: Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter at Project Row Houses. The workshop will take place in the PRH courtyard behind 2521 Holman, which can be accessed through the art houses and via Live Oak. Bring a yoga mat (if you have one), a towel, some water, & an open heart. 

Jodi and Leticia, two members of the newly formed Houston Chapter of BWAforBLM, want to take you on a 1.5 intro to yoga journey. Whether this is your first time exploring the practice or you're a daily practitioner, there is something for everyone during this mini venture. They will break down poses to ease you into deep and restorative stretches. Come in comfy attire & sneakers.

The yoga session will be followed by a brief meditation led by Mekeva McNeil. Meditation is a time of clearing the mind and letting go. You will learn some fundamental elements for the practice of meditation that can perhaps start you on the journey of practicing.

About the Artists

Leticia Contreras is an interdisciplinary artist currently working on her MFA at the University of Houston. She's in the midst of completing her RYT-200hr yoga teacher's certification and looks forward to sharing this practice with more people in her community. She believes that yoga, art & culture, and good eatin' are gifts that bring balance to one's body/mind/soul.

Meditation through movement and breath is what students will experience with Jodi Smith, with her calm and down to earth personality.   She dabbled in yoga and began to practice seriously in 2014 after dealing with anxiety and stress-related physical illnesses. Within her first month of a consistent yoga and meditation practice, she experienced a significant decrease in her stress and anxiety and became empowered to make better decisions concerning her self-care and health.

Now she shares her passion for the power of yoga and mindfulness with everybody regardless of income, body size, age or gender to promote self-care and self-acceptance..  Jodi is a 200-hrRegistered Yoga Teacher and has continued her yoga education by taking workshops and trainings invarious styles such as Kemetic Yoga, Power Yoga and Restorative yoga.  When she is not teaching, Jodi loves traveling, photography and writing.

Mekeva McNeil is a theatre educator and DJ. Mekeva is an advocate for the arts in education believing that young people can claim their power and become agents of change through the medium. She has been practicing meditation for the past 6 years and is interested in integrating a meditation practice in her work with youth.
