Public Art

Street Scaping

PRH has developed a community-based effort to invite local, national and international artists to create and install permanent public artworks around our PRH/Row House CDC campus.

2006 Project

Field of Vision
Field of Vision was a cultural enrichment project, initially installed in partnership with Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation in 1999. This permanent installation, now on PRH’s campus, presents 50 concrete eyes affixed to multicolored concrete pedestals that represent various ethnic cultures. The piece serves as a tribute to the vision of Historic Third Ward and its residents who continue to hold fast to the historic community in the midst of redevelopment and transformation. As stated by Bert Long;, “Without vision we cannot see. Knowledge of the past enables us to visualize the possibilities of the future. Field of Vision recognizes the power of seeing and making real what one can visualize.”

Bert L. Long, Jr., a native of Houston, TX, earned his degree from UCLA in 1972. Both nationally and internationally acclaimed for his work, Mr. Long is the recipient of many awards including the Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant, 1998; Texas Artist of the Year, 1990; Rome Prize Fellowship, 1990-91; NEA Visual Artists Fellowship Grant, 1987; Bemis Foundation Residency, 1988. Mr. Long has work in public and private collections all over the world. In addition to the renovations to the Field of Vision, Mr. Long’s most recent project is the completion of his 31 feet long mural titled Art/Life created for the Houston Public Library, Looscan branch.
