Held in conjunction with Communograph: Mapping Community Through Creative Action, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston presents a presentation by Mierle Laderman Ukeles.

Mierle Laderman Ukeles is a New York based artist known for her feminist and service oriented artwork. Her manifesto Maintenance Art—Proposal for an Exhibition, challenged the domestic role of women and proclaimed herself as a “maintenance artist”. Maintenance, for Ukeles, is the realm of human activities that keep things going, such as cooking, cleaning and child-rearing.

Since 1970 Ukeles has been the non-salaried Artist in Residence for New York City’s Sanitation Department, where she builds and orchestrates public projects that explore the social and ecological issues of waste management.

A conversation addressing labor and art will follow Ukeles’ talk, with Zach Moser and Eric Leshinsky of Shrimp Boat Projects, moderated by Jenni Sorkin, Assistant Professor of Critical Studies at the University of Houston School of Art.
