Dr. Ellis is a natural healer, one of the founders of the raw/health movement that came through our community in the 70′s, along with Sunshine, Erma Harris, Dick Gregory and others. Dr. Ellis is the founder and head therapist at Urban Renewal Clinic, offering holistic healing, hydro colon therapy, and gardening/cooking and lifestyle techniques. She also is one of the few Kalgen water distributors in Houston, offering Alkaline water to the community. She has healed herself of Lupus twice, (she had one recurring bout which she knocked out completely) has healed others of various cancers and diseases. We will be discussing how a raw diet and different holistic practices can sustain the body and correct various health issues.

Hitting the Pavement: The Politics of Community Based Art Today
A Conversation with founder of Project Row Houses Rick Lowe and artist Ashley Hunt

Project Row Houses Founder Rick Lowe is an artist whose work is inspired by the art of painter and muralist John Biggers who celebrated shotgun communities and Joseph Beuys who spoke about “social sculpture” and the idea of society as a whole as a work of art. Lowe has been recognized internationally for his work in urban revitalization and cultural preservation most recently receiving the Leonore Annenberg Award for Art and Social Justice in 2010. He was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard and also received the Heinz Award for Arts and Humanities.

Ashley Hunt is an artist and activist who uses video, photography, mapping and writing to engage social movements, modes of learning and public discourse. He is Co-Director of the Photography and Media program at CalArts. Hunt is currently an artist in residence at Project Row Houses and the creator of the Communograph project.
Lowe and Hunt will have a public discussion about art and social practice, a practice that emphasizes people in their relationships to each other and their surroundings.

Join Communograph House artist Journey Allen for the first of a series of Sidewalk Talks that will be happening during Round 35. This neighborhood conversation series takes place in front of the Communograph House twice a month, organized by the artists from the Communograph House and members of the surrounding community.

Sidewalk Talk: Youth Speak

Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success will be leading the conversations along with PRH TeenLife members. The talk will center on making a change in our community while exploring the history of 3rd ward and the success that once was present here.  There will also be  a discussion about some peoples’ perception of the downward spiral that the community has experienced.  This will be paired with potential solutions to the problems and a plan for implementation.  The teens will offer an activity that will allow participants to actively engage in the ideas discussed.
