Weekly Read/Write Club Led by John Pluecker

In association with his temporary installation Antena books/Libros Antena, John Pluecker will host a participatory Read/Write club on Wednesday nights at 6pm in 2515 Holman St. featuring readings by authors and writing activities for participants, the club will be based around the following texts each week:

Five Evenings of Screenings Presented by Our Image Film and Arts

The following Saturday events will be presented in conjunction with Our Cultural Portal: Reclaiming Our Image (time and location TBA).

April 14: Short films will be presented by Our Image Film and Arts

May 5: Artist Lauren Kelley will present a short film and performance on the unfortunate power of negative imagery and media stereotypes, followed by an artist talk and discussion.

May 12: DJ Flash Gordon Parks will lead a discussion on Houston’s role in the music industry world-wide.

June 2: Our Image founders Monie Henderson and Marc Newsome will lead a town hall meeting, “Reclaiming Our Image” in which they invite audience discussion about the best methods and practices for working with the media to ensure non-stereotypical, honest, cutting-edge, thought-provoking depictions of Black and other ethnic communities.

June 23: Artist Lisa Harris will present a short film and performance, followed by an artist talk and discussion about gentrification.

The Mothers of YMRP Present Family Day

The Young Mothers Residential Program presents a program for families in celebration of Black History Month. The afternoon will include a powerpoint presentation on Black History highlighting the Harlem Renaissance, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barack and Michelle Obama; a skit and a performance by children; and a screening of Our Friend, Martin, a 60 minute animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
